There are currently around 340,000 personal trainers certified in the United States. So how do you find the right one for you?

Check out these five tips on what to look for in a personal trainer so you can get up to peak performance ASAP.

1. Credentials and Experience

When interviewing a potential personal trainer, the first questions you need to ask about are their credentials and experience.

A certified personal trainer will have accreditation through a recognized organization like the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the American Council on Exercise.

2. Personality Compatibility

Not everyone teaches the same way and not everyone learns the same way. You need to recognize what motivates you and whether or not that particular trainer’s style will work for you.

3. Location

When it comes down to it, if you cannot easily get to your personal trainer, you will not go. The location of your gym or private training facility needs to be close enough that you won’t mind jumping in the car on the days you don’t feel motivated.

4. Availability

What good is hiring a personal trainer if you can’t ever meet? Be sure you compare your typical availability with the trainer’s openings.

If your schedules often clash, you’ll find it difficult be to schedule any sessions.

5. Cost

If you cannot afford your training sessions, they won’t do you any good in the long run. Fitness newbies many not need, or want, the kind of one-on-one training that someone training for a fight or competition will need.

Take a hard look at your fitness goals and your current financial situation. A solo training session with your favorite trainer might be out of your budget, but they may offer group classes or discounts when you buy a certain number of sessions up front.
